OUR IMPACT IN THE TWIN CITIES

Greater Twin Cities United Way mobilizes our community to action so all can thrive. We’re here to ensure everyone in the Greater Twin Cities has housing, food, education and economic opportunity. Together, we meet urgent needs while making lasting change to improve lives.

Our Community

A thriving future belongs to everyone. And we’re all better off when everyone has stable housing, nutritious food, opportunities to learn, and careers that support our families. But today, too many people in our community experience hunger, homelessness and unequal access to opportunity.

One in three Minnesotans struggle with financial hardship and are making impossible choices, like whether to pay for food or medicine; utilities or a car repair. They are ALICE®: Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed. ALICE families are our friends, family and neighbors who work hard but earn less than a survival budget and too much to qualify for assistance. Often, they are the people who keep our communities running — like childcare providers, cashiers, health care providers, delivery drivers — whose wages don’t keep up with the cost of living.

We connect people, resources and solutions to help when our neighbors need it most. United is the way we show up for our community.

Annual Community Impact

In 2025, Greater Twin Cities United Way made a difference in the lives of more than half a million people — connecting them to vital resources and supporting nonprofits doing the most impactful work to serve our community. To improve outcomes for all Minnesotans, we lead innovation initiatives, build coalitions and advocate for policies and funding to meet immediate needs while driving lasting change.

Our Strategies

Greater Twin Cities United Way is unique because we meet urgent community needs in housing, food, education and jobs while making lasting change to end persistent inequities so all can thrive. Our work is responsive to evolving community strengths and needs, and our impact is lasting, because we cultivate longstanding partnerships with communities, employers, policy makers and supporters.

Connecting People to Resources

Through the 211 resource helpline, we connect people to 40,000+ statewide resources to prevent and respond to urgent needs like shelter, food programs, childcare, youth programs, employment resources and so much more. On average, our 211 resource helpline specialists respond to a request every two minutes, 24-7.

Supporting Nonprofit Partners

Through our Community Investment grants, we invest in nonprofit partners who are meeting urgent needs throughout our community. These multi-year partnerships provide organizations with flexible funds, free consulting and vital connections. This support helps keep our region's nonprofit sector strong and agile.

Mobilizing Volunteers

Each year, our volunteer initiatives mobilize thousands of individuals and companies to meet urgent needs in our community. Volunteers provide local families with items to succeed at school and home through Action Day, Home For Good and Flavors of Our Community. When our community faces emergencies, we gather volunteers quickly to respond to immediate needs.

Leading Innovation

We drive systemic change through innovation initiatives in workforce development, housing, early childhood education, and food justice. We collaborate with frontline nonprofits, experts in the field and government agencies, and invest in strategic, community-driven solutions to end persistent inequities.

Advocating for Systems Change

Advocacy goes beyond meeting immediate needs to understanding why communities face persistent challenges. We collaborate with partners to engage policymakers, build coalitions, mobilize communities, and advocate for policies and funding to address urgent needs and drive lasting change.
