Recently, a man called 211 a few days before his wife was expected to give birth to their first child. They were experiencing COVID-19 related unemployment and were behind on their rent. A 211 rent assistance specialist asked the caller a few questions to determine eligibility for the State’s COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program, and they were able to begin the application process over the phone.

I was living in situation that became dangerous and I wasn’t sure where to turn. Through a phone call to 211, I ended up getting a list of temporary housing options and other resources like food shelves. It was a heightened, emotional time and I remember feeling it was an avenue to pursue when I didn’t have one.

In partnership with Greater Twin Cities United Way’s 211 resource helpline, the state of Minnesota recently launched RentHelpMN, a new rental assistance program making it possible for low- and moderate-income renters to get caught up on overdue rent and utilities. The program also makes provisions for those at risk of falling behind on rent payments due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
