United Way Action Day 2019
On Thursday, August 8, United Way teamed up with the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center to host Action Day 2019. Thanks to more than 4,500 volunteers who packed 40,000 backpacks for kids in need – and in record time! Our dedicated volunteers finished in just over 6.5 hours!
This free, family-friendly event gave attendees the chance to make an immediate impact on the educational success of kids in our community. Plus, they had a ton of fun! Check out the video on United Way’s Facebook page and photos in our Flickr album.
Each year, more than 100,000 students in our community go back to school without a backpack and the essential supplies needed to learn and succeed in the classroom.
Since 2016, United Way has been teaming up with all seven of Minnesota’s pro sports teams to bring volunteers together at Action Day to help local students start the school year ready to learn by filling backpacks with school supplies. Backpacks created at Thursday’s event will be distributed to students through nonprofits and school districts across the metro area. See agency recipients (PDF).
Missed the event? You can still make a difference by buying a backpack for a child in need. Your $28 donation to the Action Day Backpack Fund buys one backpack for a student in need. If you donate three backpacks ($84) or more, you’ll help three kids and get a free Action Day T-shirt! You can also start a fundraising team or donate to an existing team. You can also show your team pride and support your favorite mascot on the Minnesota Sports Team Mascots team!
By 2021, our goal is to ensure every K-12 child in the Greater Twin Cities can start the school year with the backpack and supplies needed for success in the classroom.
